US tariffs on imports from China are not set to take effect until Friday but new data released by Beijing suggests escalating threats between the two countries may have already begun weighing on Chinese exports to the US.
In an unscheduled data release made late on Tuesday, China’s General Administration of Customs said exports to the US had grown just 5.4 per cent year on year during the first six months of 2018, slowing markedly from a 19.3 per cent rise a year prior.
The customs administration also said exports rose just 3.8 per cent year on year last month compared to growth of 27.6 per cent in June 2017.
