Taiwan will encourage its citizens to boycott airlines that list the island as a Chinese territory on their websites, just weeks after Beijing hit out at international airlines that classified the self-ruled region as a separate entity.
“We will tell our people: ‘Those are the airlines that caved in to China, it is your choice [whether to use them]’,” said David Lee, secretary-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council.
Experts said the move reflected a tougher stance from Taipei following two years of heightened pressure from Beijing, which considers the island part of its territory.
