Macron pledges to counter China power in Pacific

France said it wanted to be at the heart of a new axis of democracies in the Indo-Pacific region aimed at preserving a rules-based order and providing a counterbalance to China’s growing power and influence.

On a visit to Sydney, President Emmanuel Macron said the region was critical for global peace and stability and France wanted to work with Australia and be at the centre of the new diplomatic project.

He said the rise of China was “good news” but there needed to be “balance” in a region, where more than 1m French citizens lived in colonial territories across the Pacific.
