Trump asks US trade rep to consider another $100bn in China tariffs

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had instructed the US trade representative to consider an additional $100bn in tariffs on Chinese imports on top of the measures targeting $50bn worth of goods already proposed.

Mr Trump said he had also instructed the secretary of agriculture to “implement a plan” to protect US farmers and agricultural interests.

The White House statement on Thursday evening has raised the stakes yet again in the back-and-forth between the two countries, which has weighed on global markets and fuelled concerns of a trade war that could harm global economic growth.
