Beijing makes example of A-lister after failed takeover

China’s securities regulator has targeted an A-list actress and her financier husband following an aborted takeover deal, aiming to make an example of them to discourage market manipulation.

Zhao Wei, 41, rose to prominence in the late 1990s when she starred as Little Swallow in the TV soap opera My Fair Princess, set in the Qing dynasty. She has since represented brands including Christian Dior, Versace and De Beers. 

But in recent years, she and Huang Youlong, her husband, have become known as a financial power couple, with China’s best-known rich list estimating their combined wealth at $1.04bn.
