Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen confirmed on Tuesday Tainan City Mayor Lai Ching-te will be Taiwan’s new premier.
Mr Lai, 57, was expected to take the position after Premier Lin Chuan resigned on Sunday after 15 months in the role. The medical expert has been mayor of Tainan, one of Taiwan’s largest cities, since 2010 and served as a legislator in Taiwan’s parliament from 1999 to 2010.
Mr Lin, 65, a former finance minister, led the executive branch of Taiwan’s government since the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took office on May 20, 2016.
