Google engineer sacked over controversial gender memo

A Google employee who wrote a controversial memo arguing that women were less suited than men to engineering and leadership jobs in the tech industry has been sacked by the Silicon Valley company.

The move came as Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google, sharply criticised the engineer, saying he had breached the internet company’s code of conduct and its “basic values”.

The engineer, identified as James Damore, confirmed his dismissal in an email to Bloomberg, saying he had been fired for “perpetuating gender stereotypes”. He said he was “currently exploring all possible legal remedies”.
