South Korea’s new President Moon Jae-in has discussed North Korea’s growing nuclear threats with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, as he looks to tackle numerous geopolitical challenges facing the east Asian nation.
Mr Moon, who was inaugurated on Wednesday, plans to send a special delegation to Beijing for talks on North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and a US missile shield deployment that has heightened tensions on the peninsula.
He stressed in the 40-minute phone conversation with Mr Xi on Thursday that North Korea should restrain from making further provocations before tensions over the US missile shield are resolved, according to the presidential office.
