Donald Trump has ratcheted up tensions in east Asia through hastily scheduled calls to the leaders of China and Japan, as fears simmer about a looming crisis over North Korea.
Officials in Beijing and Tokyo said the US president called Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, and Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, on Sunday in Washington as the Asian week began.
The timing suggests Mr Trump is preparing a response in case Pyongyang conducts a new nuclear test, amid speculation that such a move could come as early as today, the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army.
