Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged to “end all illness” with a $3bn donation to medical research.
The couple, who have previously committed 99 per cent of their Facebook shares to charity, said the money — distributed by the Chan Zuckerberg initiative created last year — would be designed to “cure, prevent or manage all diseases by the end of the century”.
Speaking at a press conference in San Francisco, Mr Zuckerberg said the money would be spent in three distinct ways: to share knowledge between scientists and engineers; to determine how technology could be harnessed for research purposes; and to join forces with others around the world to greater fund scientific endeavour.
