Seismic activity detected in the northeastern corner of North Korea is being viewed as a possible nuclear test, according to South Korea’s state news agency.
Following the detection of the activity on Friday morning South Korea’s state news service Yonhap reported a government source as saying it saw “a high possibility” that North Korea had conducted a nuclear test.
The US Geological Services Earthquake Information Center has currently classified the activity 15km from Sungjibaegam as a magnitude 5.3 explosion, noting that if it was indeed an explosion “cannot determine what type of explosion it may be, whether nuclear or any other possible type”.
