Fraught Syrian peace talks have fallen apart just days after opening, with the UN special envoy suspending negotiations in the hope that world powers would do more to improve conditions on the ground.
In the same week that Steffan de Mistura, the UN envoy, tried to launch the talks in Geneva, President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, backed by Russian air power, opened an offensive in northern Syria that sparked a new wave of displacement and infuriated an opposition that is losing ground.
Both of Syria’s warring sides had been stalling talks after several meetings with Mr de Mistura, rejecting his claim that negotiations had officially begun.
