Wang Baoan, director of China’s National Bureau of Statistics, is suspected of “serious disciplinary violations”, the anti-graft agency said late yesterday, using the usual euphemism for corruption.
Mr Wang appeared at a press conference yesterday hours before the announcement where he sought to reassure investors and the general public about the state of China’s slowing economy. He dismissed bearish comments on the economy from billionaire investor George Soros as “just one school of thought”, adding that “facts speak louder than words”.
“The long-term fundamentals of the Chinese economy are improving,” he said.
