The final whistle has blown on the brief tenure of China’s national football coach, Frenchman Alain Perrin, denting the team’s prospects of extending its global clout over world markets and politics to the beautiful game.
As recently as six months ago Chinese media were hailing Mr Perrin, former coach of UK side Portsmouth and France’s Lyon, as a “game changer” for Chinese football after his appointment in February 2014.
Chinese football fans, including fan-in-chief President Xi Jinping, were hoping Mr Perrin could provide a bright World Cup future for the men’s team, which has not played in the tournament since 2002.
