Authorities are investigating the sudden death of a senior executive charged with rooting out corruption at one of China’s three large oil companies, according to industry people familiar with the matter.
Zhang Jianwei, 58, died around lunchtime on November 3 in his office at China National Offshore Oil Corp, where he was chief compliance officer and a member of the governing party committee, according to a report last month in respected financial journal Caixin.
There is no public indication that Mr Zhang had come under suspicion as part of the two-year corruption purge pushed by top leader Xi Jinping.
