China seeks own navy facility in Djibouti

China’s navy is seeking a firmer foothold in Africa as the military confirmed it was in talks to open a logistics facility in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa.

The “support facility”, which would be a step up from current “access points” used by the Chinese navy to take on supplies during anti-piracy patrols, appears to signal a more permanent military presence on the continent, where

China has been conducting anti-piracy patrols since 2008, sending 21 convoys with a total of 60 vessels into the Gulf of Aden. They have been reliant on foreign ports for resupply.
