China shares up 4.5% on SOE consolidation talk

Chinese shares punched more than 4 per cent higher on Monday, chalking up their biggest gains since the turning point of the recent bear-market.

At the close, the Shanghai Composite was up 4.9 per cent to 3,928.42. That is the index's biggest gain since July 9, which is the day after the Chinese sharemarket closed at its bear market-low, writes Peter Wells.

This makes it the Shanghai benchmark's third-biggest one-day gain this year, and also the third-biggest of the past five years. In the final half-hour of trade, the index was up as much as 5.3 per cent.
