Japan has ramped up warnings over the dangers posed by a more uncompromising China, highlighting satellite images of land reclamation activities in the South China Sea and detailing what it said were Beijing’s “coercive attempts to change the status quo”.
The criticism, which uses blunter language than in previous years, appeared in Japan’s defence white paper: a hefty annual report that describes the country’s own military posture and analyses potential security threats.
In the section on China, which is longer and more critical than in previous years, Japan’s defence ministry said that its neighbour continued to act in an assertive manner and was “poised to fulfil its unilateral demands without compromise”.
