There have been more than 20 Syrian-linked terror plots against western targets in the past 14 months, a top UK spy chief has said, as a French manhunt closed in on two brothers suspected of attacking a satirical magazine in Paris, killing 12 people.
The comments by Andrew Parker, director-general of MI5, were the starkest assessment by any western counter-terror chief since the Syrian civil war broke out.
He was speaking as France observed a day of mourning for an attack that has rocked the country and heightened fears across Europe and the west about the threat of Islamist extremism.
