MPs have rounded on the Chinese government for refusing to allow a parliamentary committee access to Hong Kong amid continuing pro-democracy protests in the territory.
MPs from all parties attacked the Chinese authorities during a Commons debate yesterday after Sir Richard Ottaway revealed over the weekend that the foreign affairs committee had been told not to travel to Hong Kong.
The trip was planned as part of the committee’s inquiry into the government’s policy towards Hong Kong and the status of the joint declaration that both sides signed 30 years ago before Britain handed control of the territory over to China.
