Five stealth superbrands

Anthony Vaccarello

Anthony Vaccarello is bringing sexy back. Since his spring/summer 2012 collection caught the attention of the fashion world, his trademark asymmetric micro-minis and plunging dresses with fetishistic cutaways and straps have made him a go-to red-carpet designer for women who want to show off their bodies while retaining their fashion credentials. At the 2013 Met Gala, Gisele Bündchen and Anja Rubik wore, respectively, his tiny black asymmetric dress and his red leather shirt dress.

Vaccarello’s biggest breakthrough came in December of that year when he was announced as the latest young designer to create Versace’s Versus collection (pictured above, far left). The 34-year-old’s debut for the Italian house in September was as perfect a fit for the label as one of his hip-hugging minis. A rock ’n’ roll mix of tailoring – (very) little black dresses, skirts of near-underwear proportions – it featured Versace signatures such as gold safety pins and a cut-out version of the Greek key pattern. Vaccarello refers to his aesthetic as “sharp and sensual”, adding: “I’m influenced by architecture, and clean lines, surfaces and fabrics.”
