Australia has agreed a trade deal with China that will cut tariffs and remove other impediments to goods and services exports in a move the government says diversify its resource-dependent economy.
In return, Canberra will relax rules on inward investment from Chinese companies by increasing the threshold at which private investment attracts scrutiny from Australian authorities.
“This is very good for Australian agriculture,” Tony Abbott, Australia’s prime minister, told Australian radio on Monday.
