Germany expels US intelligence chief over espionage allegations

Berlin has expelled the head of US intelligence in Germany over claims that the CIA has been recruiting spies in the country as the latest transatlantic spying row threatens to hit relations between the two allies.

The forceful move comes after German authorities announced investigations into two new cases of spying in recent days and follows the scandal last year over the tapping of chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone.

In her sharpest comments yet on the affair, which comes as the two governments try to co-operate closely on how to deal with the Ukraine crisis, Ms Merkel said spying on allies was “the ultimate waste of energy”.
