Russia and China are pushing to overcome stumbling blocks to a multibillion-dollar gas supply contract before Russian President Vladimir Putin wraps up a state visit to Shanghai on Wednesday.
Mr Putin has long sought for Russia to step up trade with Asia’s fast-growing economies and especially to tap Asian capital to develop Russia’s Far East.
Since Moscow’s falling-out with the west over the crisis in Ukraine, the Russian government has stepped up those efforts. Mr Putin hopes his visit will send a strong message that a growing partnership with China is reducing Russia’s dependence on the west.
