Russia ordered new large-scale military exercises on the border of Ukraine yesterday after Kiev sent its army to flush out armed pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country, raising tensions between the two countries to new heights.
A war of words between Moscow and Kiev intensified as Vladimir Putin, Russian president, warned Ukraine that there would be “consequences” for using its army “against its own people”.
But Ukraine’s acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, accused Russia of “co-ordinating and supporting terrorist killers” inside his country.
