HSBC's closely watched "flash" purchasing managers' index survey of Chinese manufacturers has signalled business on the world's factory floor is still contracting.
The preliminary PMI for April, which tends to move Chinese stocks and China-sensitive assets, gave a reading of 48.3, below the watermark of 50 that signals expansion.
This was compared to a reading of 48 for March.
