South Korean President Park Geun-hye has lambasted the ferry's captain and crew for deserting the ship that capsized last week, saying their action amounted to "murder," as the death toll from last week's fatal crash rose to 64.
The 69-year-old captain, Lee Joon-seok, and his crew have become a target of public outrage as he and his crew were found to be among the first to escape the sinking ferry, the Sewol, while most passengers were told to stay put inside.
"Legally and ethically. . .this is an unimaginable act. It was like an act of murder that cannot and should not be tolerated," Ms Park said during a meeting with senior secretaries, according to the presidential Blue House.
