French president François Hollande has sacked his prime minister in a bid to revive his flagging administration following a stinging defeat in local elections at the weekend.
In a bold move, he appointed Manuel Valls, the pugnacious Spain-born interior minister, to succeed Jean-Marc Ayrault as leader of a Socialist government reeling from the party’s worst election drubbing for years.
It was the first step in a wholesale shake-up of the government, with big changes also expected at the finance ministry, headed by Pierre Moscovici.
