New Zealand has seen no evidence that Huawei, the Chinese telecoms company, poses a threat to its security, according to the country’s deputy prime minister.
“In the case of Huawei or any other Chinese investor, we would act if we thought there was some genuine security risk, or some real evidence of a threat to our national interests,” Bill English told the Financial Times during a visit to Hong Kong.
Huawei faces big obstacles to expansion in the US and Australia where officials have raised security concerns. But it has multiple business interests in New Zealand, where it is helping the government build a national broadband network.
