Microsoft names Nadella chief executive

The world’s largest software maker by sales has picked Satya Nadella, a 22-year Microsoft veteran, to take over from Steve Ballmer as chief executive. He will be the company’s third head after Mr Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates.

As part of wide-ranging changes at Microsoft, Mr Gates will assume a new role as “founder and technology adviser”. John Thompson, a director on the board who led the search for a new chief, will replace Mr Gates as chairman, Microsoft said on Tuesday.

“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” Mr Gates said in a statement.
