China trade numbers suggest deeper slowdown

Chinese exports and imports both fell in June, underlining the economy’s weakness and raising the prospect of a deeper slowdown in the months ahead.

Exports fell 3.1 per cent from a year earlier, compared with a 1 per cent increase in May, and far below the 10.4 per cent average increase for the first half of 2013.

Imports slipped 0.7 per cent from a year earlier, an indication of sluggish domestic demand. Imports were down from a 0.3 per cent decline in May and also far below the 6.7 per cent average increase in the first half.
