Barack Obama and Xi Jinping opened an unusual personal summit meeting in the desert resort town of Palm Springs on Friday evening with both pledging to try to build a “new model” of bilateral ties.
In opening statements, the two leaders stressed that their countries, and the rest of the world, had enormous interests in their maintaining close and stable ties, despite their many differences.
“The whole world is watching,” said Mr Xi.
