Demonstrators claimed victory on Sunday against Turkey’s prime minister, amid uncertainty about when the police would return to Istanbul’s main Taksim square, the scene of mass protests and repeated tear-gassing in recent days.
Speaking by a fire in Gezi Park, which adjoins Taksim, a bearded protester called Jimmy said Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to withdraw police from the square was the demonstrations’ main accomplishment.
“I think he is afraid of us,” Jimmy said. “We will start to protest again, because we need a democracy; he is not our Sultan, we are a republic.”
