China eases course for short sellers

China has made it easier for investors to short stocks, in a further effort to help restore confidence in the country’s equity markets.

A new platform, the China Securities Finance Corporation, will enable brokerages to borrow stock from institutional investors, making it easier to short shares in Chinese companies.

The lending of shares via CSFC began yesterday. China launched a short-selling trial three years ago, but limited availability of stocks for borrowing has stunted development of such trading.
