NY Times says Wen story prompted hacking attacks

Chinese hackers persistently attacked the New York Times last year as it was working on a story revealing the alleged business interests and assets amassed by family members of premier Wen Jiabao, according to the newspaper.

A story in The New York Times said the email accounts of David Barboza, its Shanghai bureau chief and writer of the story about Mr Wen’s family, and Jim Yardley, its former Beijing bureau chief, had been broken into.

“Security experts hired by The Times to detect and block the computer attacks gathered digital evidence that Chinese hackers, using methods that some consultants have associated with the Chinese military in the past, breached The Times’s network,” the paper said.
