The outgoing head of the Chinese Communist party has outlined a deeply conservative vision for the future of the world’s most populous nation, insisting that state dominance of the economy and one-party rule will be maintained.
“We must uphold leadership of the party,” Hu Jintao, who also serves as state president, told more than 2,300 retired and serving officials at the opening of the party’s 18th National Congress yesterday.
“We should steadily enhance the vitality of the state-owned sector of the economy and its capacity to leverage and influence the economy,” he said.
