The Hong Kong share price of PetroChina opened down 2.5 per cent yesterday after rumours about the whereabouts of its chairman, Jiang Jiemin, spread online on Tuesday.
The chairman of the world’s fourth-largest company by market capitalisation was last seen publicly on July 12. His disappearance prompted online rumours about whether he might have fled the country.
In an effort to quell the rumours, PetroChina’s majority shareholder CNPC posted a statement late on Tuesday saying that he had participated in a company meeting on Monday. It did not include a photograph.
