Wall St and Shanghai take opposite paths

Monday 16:00. Stock markets in the US and China, the world’s two biggest economies, are flirting with multiyear peaks and lows respectively, highlighting to some investors the contradictions embedded in the broader market’s summer rally.

In thin and mixed trading befitting the end of August, equities are inching back, as traders pare some recently winning bets.

The FTSE All-World equity index is retreating 0.2 per cent from its best level in almost four months, having risen 9 per cent since the start of June on easing eurozone debt tensions and better US economic data.
