Japan is replacing its ambassador in China just two years after he was appointed, as tensions between Asia’s two biggest economies have grown over a territorial dispute.
Uichiro Niwa, who became the first Japanese ambassador to China to be appointed from the private sector, is to be succeeded by Shinichi Nishimiya, a career diplomat and the deputy minister for foreign affairs.
The replacement of Mr Niwa, whose outspokenness has been a source of concern for the government, highlights the difficulty of managing the fraught bilateral relationship even as economic ties have become stronger over the years.
