A Chinese court has handed the wife of disgraced politician Bo Xilai a suspended death sentence in one of the most politically sensitive cases in the country’s history.
The Hefei Intermediate People’s Court found Gu Kailai guilty of murdering Neil Heywood, a British business consultant who had long worked for the family, said two lawyers present at the hearing on Monday morning.
With her verdict announced, outside attention is now set to turn to how the ruling Communist party plans to deal with her husband, an ambitious populist who upset the delicate power balance at the top of the party with an open push for power until he was purged earlier this year.
