Anti-Japanese protests sweep China

The biggest anti-Japan street protests in seven years flared across China on Sunday after Japanese activists landed on disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The demonstrations mark the greatest deterioration in bilateral relations since Japan arrested the crew of a Chinese fishing boat in September 2010 which had rammed a Japanese coast guard vessel close to the outcrops that Tokyo calls the Senkaku Islands.

About 1,000 people marched in the southern city of Shenzhen according to Xinhua, the official news agency, where protesters overturned a Japanese-made police car and attacked a Japanese restaurant.
