Japan has arrested five Hong Kong citizens who tried to plant a Chinese flag on the disputed Senkaku islands, in an escalation of maritime tensions in Asia.
Japanese police detained the activists who were promoting China’s claim to the islands – known as the Diaoyu in China – in the East China Sea that are at the centre of a dispute between Tokyo and Beijing.
The incident came as tensions flared between Japan and South Korea on the 67th anniversary of Japan’s surrender at the end of the second world war.
