Defector declares regime cracking

The Syrian former prime minister who defected last week has declared the regime of Bashar al-Assad to be collapsing, even as it steps up its military campaign.

In his first public appearance since defecting, Riyad Hijab, who became the highest-ranking civilian official to abandon Mr Assad when he slipped out of the county with members of his extended family, said in Amman the regime controlled no more than 30 per cent of Syria.

“I assure you, from my experience and former position, that the regime is collapsing – spiritually, financially and economically – as it escalates militarily,” Mr Hijab said.
