Europe’s top competition watchdog is scrutinising potential collusion in the telecoms industry, focusing on meetings between the chief executives of Europe’s biggest groups.
In the first stage of an antitrust probe, Brussels competition officials have demanded information about discussions between the leaders of five telecoms groups, after they met to debate industry issues.
Nicknamed the “E5”, the meetings, which started in 2010, included four former national incumbents – Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telecom Italia and Telefónica – as well as the UK-based wireless group Vodafone. Topics at the meetings ranged from the challenge posed by US tech groups such as Google and Apple to harmonisation of technology platforms.
