Xi Jinping, China’s heir apparent, used a trip to Washington to conciliate a US business community that was once a strong source of support for Beijing but has cooled in recent years.
Mr Xi sought to play down persistent criticisms of doing business in China and urged the US to become more open to Chinese investment in the country.
“The economic agendas of each country have a lot to offer each other,” he told a group of US business leaders on Tuesday. “The golden age is before us, not behind us,” he said, a phrase variously attributed to William Shakespeare, St Simon and a Roman historian.
