Don’t jump aboard the anti-Dow bandwagon

The Olympic Games is the biggest show on earth, which makes it a target for those who want to drum up either trouble or money.

There have been protests (US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving their black power salutes in Mexico City in 1968), terrorist outrages (the killing of Israeli athletes in Munich in 1972), the US-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games and the Soviet tit-for-tat at Los Angeles in 1984.

At the same time, a television audience of several billion means companies are happy to pay up to $100m to become Games sponsors.
