Kim Jong-il, North Korea’s dictator, has died, piling pressure on his inexperienced son to ensure the stability of his impoverished, nuclear-armed state.
A North Korean television newscaster, clad in black, announced on Monday that the 70-year-old had died on Saturday of physical and mental overwork while on a train journey.
Kim, who was known for his love of rich food and liquor, has been noticeably frail after suffering a suspected stroke in 2008.
