Commodities: Markets watch out for hints of moderating demand

At commodities conferences in China, the foyer is often thronged with traders who thrust their business cards at everyone who walks by in the hopes of doing a deal.

The eager traders represent one of the dominant forces in commodities markets in recent years: demand from China.

During the global financial crisis, it was this demand that stepped in to put a floor under the market after a precipitous drop in commodities prices during the second half of 2008.
