Legal merger first for China

Partners at one of Australia’s top law firms have voted to merge with King & Wood, China’s largest law firm by employees.

Mallesons Stephen Jacques’ 170 partners approved the tie-up, giving the go-ahead for one of the most significant combinations in the legal market.

“This is groundbreaking,” said Tony Williams, a former managing partner of Clifford Chance who now advises law firms on strategy. “It is a clear message to US and UK firms that they will no longer be able to dominate the global legal market.”
