Sony is to take full ownership of its Sony Ericsson joint venture with Ericsson in a move designed to bolster its position in the mobile handset market.
The Japanese group will pay €1.05bn ($1.5bn) in cash for its former partner’s share. The deal marks a definitive exit from handsets for Ericsson and allows the Swedish company to concentrate on network equipment.
“We have been in the handset business since it started, so this is an emotional day for us,” Hans Vestberg, chief executive, told the Financial Times.
